A new study in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association recommends the use of harnesses over collars for dogs with certain conditions of the eye including glaucoma and thin corneas. Dogs that pull while being walked on a traditional collar may suffer from increased intraocular pressure. For dogs with ocular conditions, this increased pressure can lead to severe eye damage including vision loss.
Many dog owners are choosing anti-pulling harnesses like the SENSE-ible Harness and the Easy Walk Harness. These front-leash attachment harnesses are effective at reducing a dog’s natural instict to pull by allowing the handler to deliver subtle body cues that decrease pulling behavior safely and humanely.
Linda Lady, professional dog trainer and inventor of the SENSE-ible and SENSE-ation Harness, developed her no-pull harnesses based on horse training methods. The SENSE-ible Harness training method provides a gradual and humane approach to developing a calm and responsive dog. According to Lady, “Pulling behavior stems from a dog’s natural response to brace against pressure from the backward pull of a leash. The SENSE-ible Harness is designed to work with pulling a leash upwards, sideways or forward. As long as a leash is not pulled backwards, there is an immediate reduction of pulling behavior.”
