Ever wonder what it takes to be a search and rescue dog? Training, drive and above all - heart. According to the Search and Rescue Society of British Columbia (SARBC), search and rescue dogs must be proficient in obedience, agility, tracking, retrieving, and scenting.

The Vail Daily News recently profiled prospective search and rescue team Jennifer Rosely and her dog, Velcro. Rosely and Velcro participate in a FEMA sponsored search and rescue training program in the Denver area. It will take almost 2 years and nearly ten thousand dollars for Rosely and Velcro to be ready to take the search and rescue certification test.

If you’re interested in becoming a search and rescue team with your dog check out the Search and Rescue Foundation. SDF offers a comprehensive training program for canines and people. Even if you don’t qualify for the training program, there are lots of ways you can participate!
