Traveling With Your Dog? Here’s What To Pack!

May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Dogs are now an integral part of our families, so more often than not, they come along for the weekend trip to the cottage, the 3 day visit to Grandma’s house, or even those long road trips across the country. If you are traveling with your dog for the first time, you might be wondering what you should pack. The Bradenton Herald has a great article called Roving With Rover, and it discusses exactly what to take.

According to Dr. Marty Becker, here are the six must haves when you are traveling with your pet:

1) ID - Make sure your dog has a dog tag (with your current phone number), a rabies tag and if you can, write your cell phone number on the back of their collar.

2) An Extra Dog Leash - This is a fantastic idea. I can’t tell you how many times we have been on a trip, and in the middle of it, we can’t find one of the leads.

3) First Aid Supplies - A solid, comprehensive Dog First Aid Kit is a must have for folks that travel with their dog. Make sure your first aid kit has bandages, antiseptic and gauze for treating cuts. A cold pack is also a key factor. The more items your kit has, the better!

4) A Safe Place To Ride - Make sure to restrain your pets on those trips across state, or even across town. To keep your pet from pawing you while you drive, consider a car safety harness If you have a small dog, try a small, well ventilated crate or pet carrier.

5) Quick Clean Up Supplies - We definitely agree with Dr Becker on this one. We use Biodegradable Dog Bags, as they are effective and Earth friendly. Dry Dog Instant Clean is a wonderful aid when on the road, as it can clean your dog when you don’t have access to a tub.

6) Familiar Food & Blanket - Make sure to bring their favorite toys, blankies and even their favorite treats. Stick to their regular food, as changing their diet when traveling can lead to unpleasant surprises for everyone. Trust us on that one.

Traveling with your pet can be fun and if you do your homework and make it comfortable for them, they should do just fine!
